7.30pm BEER MAKING & TASTING - TALK by MARTYN SMITH

ALL YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT BEER (But were afraid to ask!)

TICKETS NOW SOLD OUT

Martyn Smith joined the brewing industry in 1970 as a Trainee Brewer at the Ind Coope Brewery in his home town of Burton on Trent. After a year of basic training, followed by a Masters degree at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, and a variety of posts in brewing and packaging, Martyn was appointed in 1986 to the Ind Coope Romford Brewery as Head Brewer. Four years later, he moved to cider making with Showerings at Shepton Mallet as Operations Director. However, in 1992 he returned to beer making as Production Director for Daniel Thwaites in Blackburn before moving to the Caribbean as Brewing Consultant to Banks (Barbados) Brewery, from which retirement called in March 2000. In this evening's talk, we'll start off with a bit of instruction on the rudiments of tasting, including the four basics of salt, sweet, sour and bitter. This will be followed by a short description of the brewing process accompanied by slides. Then we'll get on to tasting some different styles of beer, and trying to describe the differing taste characteristics. Finally there will be perhaps be time for some questions (and maybe some answers) and possibly to adjourn to the bar!!

7.30pm LINE DANCING with live music from GEMMA FAIRWEATHER

Sue Marks who runs Route 66 line dancing group will be running a line dancing workshop from 7.30pm to 8.30pm. Sue and her husband Bill have been line and partner dancing for about 15 years. Sue has also spent the last 12 years teaching in Somerset and some of the members have been with her from the very start. Quite often they meet up with all the top choreographers and dancers allowing Sue to keep up to date with all the latest dances, groups and music. One of the great things about line dancing is the fact that you do not need a partner. It is also very good exercise.
Gemma Fairweather has been singing since the age of 13 when her first recorded album was sold for charity. She has since toured as support act with Michael English as part of Ritz Records. Gemma has taught music and singing at her local college and has been involved with the theatre in drama, musicals and opera. Since deciding on a career in country music Gemma has become extremely popular on the UK circuit. Her unique clear voice, wide repertoire and personality make her a favourite with any audience be it country or line dance. She released her first album entitled "Who I Am" in December 2002 and her second album was released in October 2004 and aptly called "This One's For The Girls". It is proving to be as popular as the first. Her third album was released in 2006 and is called "Where Your Road Leads". Gemma is certainly an act to look out for. She is happiest when she is performing and enjoys encouraging the audience to take part. She has been delighting audiences in France and Denmark as well as the UK and is probably one of the finest female vocalists in the UK today and an act not to be missed!

8.00pm. SUPERBRAIN QUIZ

Our ever-popular quiz has featured in almost every Festival in the last 20 years and it seems that Russ Hollowell has been the question-setter and question-master for most of them!! Russell can be confidently expected to put together the usual range of easy to impossible questions, depending on whether or not you know the answer! So, it will be business as usual for teams of four competing for the new Festival Quiz Trophy. You don't need to be a mastermind, top of the form or a tele-addict to take part, so ask the family or friends to make up a team.
