Halfway House (Pitney) via South Hill and Upton

Follow the route for the Long Sutton and Knole walk until you reach the end of Windyridge Lane. When you reach the “garden” you continue in a straight line keeping the house on your right and the hedge immediately to your left. Go through a gate and continue until the track bends round sharply to the left. Follow it and continue for about one hundred and fifty yards with the woods on your right. The strip of woodland is between one and two hundred yards wide at this point and there is a path off to the right about three-quarters of the way through it. If you reach the end of the woods, you’ve gone too far! This path leads you in a fairly straight line, descending as you go. At the bottom you should see a track (Burnt House Lane) crossing the path you are on. Turn right, then almost immediately left through the kissing gate, then descend through the woods for fifty yards until you emerge into a field. Continue ahead with the hedge on the left, descending to the gate at the bottom which leads into a track. After about two hundred yards this track joins a road. Turn left and follow the road to a junction with a small triangle of grass in its centre. Turn right and walk up the hill into Upton. Go straight across at the junction and continue in a straight line for about two hundred yards before turning right up a track with a quarry appearing on your left. Cross the railway bridge and continue to follow the track until it bends sharply left. Leave the track at this point and follow the right hand edge of the field in front of you. In the far right hand corner of the field is an exit, which, after a path of twenty yards, emerges onto the B31 53. The Halfway house is about thirty yards to your left on the opposite side of the road.

After your refreshment you can arrange to be collected from the pub, catch a bus back or turn left as you leave the pub, left down Hermitage Hill and take the turning to the right (Middlegate on the OS map) at the crossroads, which leads to Westcombe and then to Bancombe Road. Go down the footpath after Bancombe House and emerge opposite the playing field.
