Somerton Summer Arts Festival 2010
9th to 17th July
The Somerton Summer Festival is organised by a small committee of unpaid volunteers and its aim is to provide a wide range of quality entertainment at an affordable price for the local community. For the last four years, in order to be able to attract larger audiences to some of our events, we have erected a marquee on the Sports Field at Gassons Lane, and I’m pleased to say that this has been very successful, in spite of the additional costs involved. During the 2009 Festival we entertained more than 2500 people at ticketed events in the marquee, at St Michael’s Church and in the pubs around the town. In addition we entertained many more people at the Market Fair and the Funday, and for such a generally dismal summer, we were blessed with fairly good weather for both days! Also, the Art Exhibition attracted over 800 visitors during the week. (Unfortunately, the economic downturn in early 2009 meant that we did not attract quite such big audiences as we had anticipated and we raised slightly less than previously in sponsorship and advertising revenue – but of course costs continue to rise eg postage, insurance, advertising and indeed the cost of artistes)
Over the last twenty years the Somerton Summer Festival has become one of the major events in the Somerset calendar and part of its success is due to the sponsorship and advertising given by local businesses. Without this generous support we would not be able to produce what we hope is a very entertaining and enjoyable time for everyone.
