12.00 noon - 5.00pm SOMERTON FUNDAY
Funday is a well-established and traditional part of Festival week. It provides the opportunity to relax and have a good time for all the family.
Children’s Fun
Once again this year we have lined up all the usual activities that make fun day what it is - a great Fun Day out. There will of course be the customary bouncy castle, inflatable slides, Ferris wheel and other fairground type rides for the children to enjoy. We’ll also have a children’s activity area
There will be special performances in the marquee with “Reo Beats” Samba Band and a special performance from a newcomer to the Festival – Dominic (Mad Dominic). He is a professional entertainer with 20 years experience. Dominic performs for children and adults all over the UK. A popular addition to this year’s event
The Arena
We welcome back the fascinating “Falcon High” falconry display team with a static display of these wonderful birds of prey near the arena. Weather permitting; we will witness another breathtaking display by these elegant acrobats of the air. A Taekwondo display, which proved a great hit last year will take place by the recently formed Somerton Club, organised by Nicky Turner. The 10th Essex Military Display team will make a welcome return this year with their living history encampment. They will be wearing authentic wartime uniforms, and have period equipment and weapons. Football either 5 a-side or 7 a-side knockout matches will take place throughout the day. We will have other exciting events around the field to participate in to make your day a good one, for example, archery with Max Smart, and 6-bed trampoline from John Herbert, plus remote control cars to try your driving skills on, and not forgetting the usual traditional games, treasure hunt, raffle and tombola.

Do not forget the delicious, sumptuous goodies to be had at Liz’s Lair with seating and tables to relax at and enjoy tempting cakes, teas, coffees and cold drinks. An ice cream van will also be in attendance should you need to chill out, and for those with a more substantial appetite, there will be a hog roast. All in all it is going to be a great day with something for everyone!
Entertainment
There will be entertainment throughout the day including The Kingsbury Episcopi Band who were established more than 100 years ago, although the exact date remains unknown. Throughout the band’s history, several generations of the same families have played in the band and continue to do so. Kingsbury Band is open to anyone who wishes to play a musical instrument regardless of ability, age or indeed anything else. There is no subscription and no audition to pass. Our current age range is 12 to 80 and, in the past, it has ranged from 7 to 94!
The Somerton Festival Band who play a wide repertoire of classical music, novelty items, music from Broadway and West-End shows and compilations of music from popular American writers and performers such as Duke Ellington, Sinatra, Hoagy Carmichael and Leroy Anderson. They will also be giving a concert on Wednesday 14th July in the Festival see page 62.
Appalachian Dancers No Mean Feet will be performing a lively and exciting form of American folk dance, Appalachian Dancing Steps. English, Irish and Scottish settlers took their own styles of folk dancing to the New World, eventually merging all together with African and Native American steps and rhythms. The resulting dance form survived in the isolated area of the Appalachian Mountains, and has re-emerged over the past 20-30 years as a popular form of folk dance, even here in the UK! No Mean Feet, using tap shoes to emphasise the percussive element of Appalachian dance, and wearing brightly coloured authentic costumes, maintain a traditional style of performance: The 'Shoestring Band' provides us with “Old Time” live music, and individual free styling is interspersed with precision team routines.

8.00pm JAIME REGAN
After emigrating to New Zealand in 2003, musician and singer-songwriter Jaime Regan, formed his own indie-rock band, who gigged continuously around New Zealand and quickly became popular on the local music scene, gathering a number of accolades from the national New Zealand Press (amongst others) for their atmospheric sound, energised performances, poetic lyricism and Jaime's distinctive voice. By the winter of 2008, back in the UK once more and having decided to venture out solo, Jaime put himself into a self-imposed hibernation, writing new songs and making stripped back, intimate home recordings. Emerging in the spring of 2009, Jaime headed into Church Road Studios in Hove (Brighton) with a collection of demos, a head full of potential ideas and the intention of exploring the songs in the setting of a real studio, working with the talents of resident producer Julian Tardo. A few weeks later, the songs that would become the True North EP were wrapped in lush, layered vocal-harmonies, acoustic bass (courtesy of Eddie Myer from Turin Brakes) and Jaime's haunting vocals, but they still retain the warmth and intimacy of those home demos; the sound of a solitary singer playing his songs as though to a sole listener.Live on stage, Jaime's voice comes to the fore, moving from personal indie/folk songs to searing foot stompers. He has recently returned from a three-month tour of New Zealand supporting alt-country/bluegrass/folk band The Eastern and is now gigging around the UK. See www.myspace.com/jaimeregan
