11.00am SOMERTON MORRIS FRINGE
After last year’s success, in spite of the inclement weather, the Morris Fringe, or “Invasion” as it is becoming known, will be held again in 2010 – this time moving to Saturday July 17th. The fringe will be expanded in 2010 with more teams being invited to dance from 11am in the town moving onto a mass dance in the early evening followed by a folk music session in the White Hart, hosted by Glastonbury Folk Club, and the Unicorn hosted by Dr Turberville’s Morris . (The themes of the sessions will be different to allow for differing tastes in folk music.). The workshop space in 2009 entertained a number of interested learners and some experienced dancing visitors attracted from the New Forest and Bristol Morris Teams. Attending and dancing in the main evening event in 2009 were, Challis, Priston Jubilee, Wyvern Jubilee, Sweet Copin, Treacle Eater Clog, No Mean Feet and hosted Dr Turberville’s Morris. We are hoping to attract more teams this year and hoping for kinder weather. Here we are again we reach the end of another Somerton Festival. We hope that you have had a wonderful time so far and that you will join us and enjoy a cabaret night to remember with three very enjoyable acts. During the evening we shall be announcing the winners of the various competitions and seeing who has won the prizes in the Festival Grand Prize Draw. It is also the time when the overworked committee can let their hair down, (for those who have any!!), relax, and have the odd glass of shandy(!!!) to celebrate the end of all their hard work. The following are the three acts to enjoy in this Cabaret Night.MARTIN SMITH will be joining us this evening both as compere and also performing his own unique brand of stand-up comedy. Martin performed for us last year as ‘Baron Von Schmitt-Haus’and those of you who saw him will agree he is a naturally funny man and will be a great way of starting off our Cabaret Night.

THE FIREBIRDS - Rock’n’Roll par excellence
Formed in 1981 and one of Europe’s finest Rock ‘n’ Roll bands, it is great to have the boys back again in the Festival. The band is able to cover the complete spectrum of 1950’s and 1960’s music from commercial Rock ‘n’ Roll songs to Rockabilly, harmonised Doo Wop, instrumentals, ballads and their own compositions. The band has undertaken extensive tours both in Britain and Europe. During 1992 they performed at the official opening of the Euro Disney Theme Park in Paris – the only British band to appear! - and in May 2000 they made their first visit to the USA playing venues in Memphis and Las Vegas. In 2002 they were honoured by being the only non-American band to be invited to play the Rockability Festival at the Carl Perkins Civic Centre in Jackson, Tennessee. More recently they have appeared in both Rome and Denmark and at the Paris Musical Festival and now they will be playing at Somerton Summer Arts Festival.
