SUMMARY:Naval History Talk – Part of the Somerton Music and Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Naval History Talk\n\nBattle of the Atlantic: The Foundation of Victory \nJoshua Bassett will present a talk about the Battle of the Atlantic\, the longest running and geographically largest battle of the second world war. For four years from 1939 to the battle’s climax in 1943\, British and Allied navies fought a life-or-death struggle against the menace of Axis U-boats. This talk will cover the battles’ key events\, and illustrate how victory in the Atlantic laid the foundation for Allied victory everywhere in 1945. \nFrom Barn Engines to the Battle of Jutland \nIn 1915 the Petter-Westland Company in Yeovil (now Leonardo-Westland) took its first steps from producing agricultural engines into aircraft manufacture. Immediately successful due to the skill level of the factory workers\, it made a batch of Royal Navy Seaplanes of the most advanced type at the time. \nOne of these aircraft\, Number 8359\, was amongst the first to be manufactured by Westlands and would become the only one to take part in the Battle of Jutland in 1961. It was piloted by the famed aviator Lt Fredrick Joseph Rutland\, a was a pioneer of British naval aviaition who earned the nickname “Rutland of Jutland”  and a DSC for his exploits. Now\, over 100 years later\, the original sections of his aircraft\, a Short Type 184\, are back in Yeovil as key exhibits at the Fleet Air Arm Museum. \nDave Morris\, the museum curator\, looks at how Petters became aircraft builders in Yeovil\, how Westlands got its name and the journey Rutland’s aircraft made from the factory to Jutland\, ended its service in World War 1 and ultimately returned to Yeovil. \nRefreshments (tea\, coffee and soft drinks) will be provided \nTicket prices:  Early Bird £5  |  Advance £6  |  On the Door £7\nTickets for all events listed can be purchased online now (www.somertonartsfestival.co.uk)\, and will also be available to purchase from our new ticket office at The Stationery House in Somerton from 1st May.

SUMMARY:Battle of the Bands – Part of the Somerton Music and Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:There’s one remaining slot left for a band to play at Somerstock during the Friday night session. So we’re pitting three bands against each other in a Battle of the Bands to take place at the Parish Rooms on Friday 19th April. The winner\, chosen by the Somerstock judges and votes received on the night\, will open Somerstock 2024\, performing first up on the Friday evening (Friday 12th July) \nThe bands battling it out for the prime slot will be: \nVetna \nVetna are a car crash between different genres and eras\, in a comfy\, compact format for your own post-modern\, liquid entertainment. A music collective founded by Lorenzo Chia and based in Bristol since 2020. \nThis act proposes a bold experimentation\, beginning with alternative rock and post-rock\, with an unmistakable 90s and 00s imprint (Radiohead\, The Dandy Warhols\, The Smashing Pumpkins\, Verdena\, Godspeed You! Black Emperor\, La Femme\, just to name a few)\, and mixing it with a powerful electronic outfit (Four Tet\, Boards Of Canada\, Crystal Castles\, Nicolas Jaar). Everything spiced up with punk attitude and a hot psychedelic vibe. \nAbsolute Zero \nFormed in 2022 with a combined age of just 32\, Absolute Zero have been wowing audiences with their youthful energy and awesome ability beyond their years. In 2023 they recorded their first EP\, available here to download\, or buy on CD. Despite their size it is clear these guys are gonna be BIG – so check them out! ‘Cos nothing is as cool as Absolute Zero!’ \nJunebug \nA fantastic up and coming band of local young musicians from Strode College. \nTickets £5.00 \nSomerstock takes place at Somerton Rec on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th July. SUMMARY:WW2 Talks - Part of the Somerton Music and Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:An evening of fascinating talks given by two local historians\, covering Operation Pedestal and The Great Escape\n\n\nOperation Pedestal – The Convoy that Saved Malta\na presentation by Joshua Bassett\n\n\nIn August 1942\, the Royal Navy organised a large convoy to relieve the besieged island of Malta in the mediterranean. For four days and nights the ships pressed onwards in the face of fearsome German and Italian attacks. At great cost\, crucial food and fuel supplies were delivered to the island\, saving it from surrender in the nick of time. \nThe Great Escape and The Rolex Watches\na presnetation by David Morris\nMany Allied military personnel were captured and taken prisoner of war during WW2\, with many airmen being held captive in the German camp Stalag Luft III (made famous by the film ‘The Great Escape’). Royal Navy Pilot Derek Martin\, a Devon Man\, was shot down over Norway in 1940\, taken prisoner by German Forces and spent the entire war behind the wire in Stalag Luft III.  This talk explores his story from take-off\, shoot down\, capture and time as a prisoner\, and explains how\, of all things\, Rolex wrist watches were a vital piece of escape equipment for those trying to break out\nand make a run for it. Intrigued? Come and learn more about ‘The Rolex Great Escape watches’. \nThere will be a break between the talks at 8.15. Price includes tea\, coffee and biscuits. \n\n\nTicket prices:  Early Bird £7  |  Advance £8 | On the Door £9\nhttps://somertonartsfestival.co.uk/events/ww2-talkshttps://somertonartsfestival.co.uk/events/ww2-talks/ \n
