SUMMARY:Bringing History to Life – Talks on The Hunt For The Bismarck and The Sinking of the Tirpitz – Part of the Somerton Music and Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Parish Rooms for two fascinating talks by local historians taking us on a journey of discovery through some of the Second World War’s more interesting facets. \nThe Hunt For The Bismarck\nJosh Bassett\, Founder of Historigraph is back to tell us about one of the most dramatic and famous naval battles of WW2. Lasting for nine long days\, these events saw dozens of warships involved and two devastating sinkings in what became the most costly naval battle in the entire European war.\nThe Sinking of the Tirpitz\nDave Morris\, the Principal Conservator of the National Museum of the Royal Navy returns with another fascinating insight into local military history. Royal Academy artist Stanley Lewis was based at Low Ham on the Searchlight Battery and was commissioned by the navy to build a 3D papier-mache model of Alta Fjord for the pilots to study and learn the terrain/approach. Dave’s talk covers his story\, why the Tirpitz was where it was and all about how Dave is a leading a team to recover parts from one of the crashed Barracudas that took part in the raid.\nRefreshments will be available during the break between the two talks. \nTicket prices:  Early Bird £7 | Standard £8 | On the Door £9\nTickets are on sale on line and will also be available from Stationery House in Somerton from 1st May. Early Bird ends 18th May. \nsee www.somertonartsfestival.co.uk

SUMMARY:Could You Help a Local Child? By Fostering
DESCRIPTION:Could You Help a Local Child? \nRight now\, there is a real need for foster homes in Somerset\, so children in care can stay close to their schools\, friends\, and communities. By fostering\, you can make a life-changing difference to a child in your area\, offering them stability\, care\, and a sense of belonging. You’ll need to be aged 21 or over with a spare room in their home\, but there is no upper age limit – wisdom is a bonus. No experience is needed as foster carers receive full training and ongoing support\, including weekly payments to support them financially. If you’ve ever thought about fostering – contact our friendly team on 0800 587 9900 for a no commitment chat\, or visit www.fosteringinsomerset.org.uk to learn more. \nYou could also come along to one of our ‘Cuppa with a Carer’ events. These relaxed sessions are a great opportunity to chat with local foster carers over a coffee and slice of cake (provided free of charge) and gain a realistic insight into the challenges and rewards of fostering. \nUpcoming sessions: \n\nMonday 12th January\, 6–8pm – Lady Smith Memorial Hall and Parish Rooms\, Market Square\, Somerton TA11 7NB\nWednesday 14th January\, 6–8pm – Westlands Entertainment Venue\, Westbourne Close\, Yeovil BA20 2DD\nThursday 15th January\, 6-8pm – Wellington Community Centre\, A White Hart Lane\, Wellington TA21 8HN\n\nFor more information about upcoming events visit the Events page of the website or Facebook.
