SUMMARY:80th anniversary of D-Day Proclamation and laying of wreaths and Peace Bells
DESCRIPTION:At 7.30am we will gather outside St. Michaels for a peal of bells followed by the proclamation being read by our town crier\, Steve Davis at 8 am. Justin Maynard from St. Cleers Chapel will offer a prayer and wreaths will be laid at the War Memorial. \nAt 11.00 am\, along with other schools across the nation\, a poem to mark the occasion will be read at King Ina Academy\, unfortunately this is not a public event. \nAt 6.30pm\, the Peace Bells will be rung from St. Michaels. \nLater in the evening from 7.30pm onwards there will be a beacon lighting ceremony at the recreation ground in Gassons Lane. Due to expected numbers you would be urged to walk if possible as parking will be limited to Blue Badge holders only sadly. \nThe Somerton Concert Band will play\, and the beacon will be lit at 9.15pm in line with all the other beacons across the country\, by ex-Wren Pamela Miley. \nThere will be other entertainment to mark the ceremony\, and The Club will be open for drinks and Somerton Rugby Club will be onsite with their Saxon Kitchen burger stand.

SUMMARY:80th anniversary of D-Day Dinner Dance
DESCRIPTION:We will be hosting a dinner dance at Edgar Hall. Tickets are available from Cobbs Wholefoods and cost £10.00 each which includes 2 bottles of fizz for the tables\, (tables are for 10) Bennys will be providing a Fish & Chip supper\, which is payable on the night. \nThroughout the D-Day period Fish & Chip shops will be donating £1 per portion of Fish & Chips sold to SSAFA\, The Armed Forces Charity. \nWe are hoping that guests will join in by dressing in clothing of the period to add to the atmosphere. Berties Big Band will play music of the time\, along with songs from Somerton Dramatic Society. There will be spot prizes for dancing and a raffle to raise more money for the charity. If you would like to make a donation to the raffle prizes please let me know\, anything of significant value will be auctioned off to maximize our fund raising for the evening.

DESCRIPTION:Recreation Ground D-Day Picnic and Fun Day. \nOn the Sunday we are holding a D-Day picnic and fun day for all residents\, this is a free to attend event and there will be plenty of free activities to get involved in\, we hope there will be something for everyone\, young and old. \nThere will be games and stalls\, a climbing wall\, rides\, musicians and singers\, coconut shy\, drum bus\, children’s crafts\, and a circus workshop and lots of war time exhibits including vehicles\, uniforms\, rations etc. \nWe welcome the offer of local clubs\, organisations\, businesses and societies having stalls on the day to either promote themselves or to raise funds for their causes. \nIf you would be interested in participating in this day’s events please get in touch\, we are in need of volunteers for the day and also if you would like to have a stall/stand/ game etc please let us know and I will forward the relevant form to you. There will be no charge for the stalls\, we just need to see your insurance details. \nWe would like to get as much of Somerton represented at the event as possible so please seize this opportunity to get involved with this event and make it a fantastic community day that we can all be proud of. \nThank you for your time and hope to hear from you soon.
